When your
engine is running, it gets very hot. In order to cool it off, coolant (normally water and antifreeze) is pumped through
the engine, various other components, and through the radiator. This process allows heat to be removed from the engine.
The heat gets stored in the coolant that will be cooled off by running through the radiator.
The water pump is what actually pushes the water through this process. This is a component that is bolted to the front of your engine and spun by one of the fan belts. Because of this setup, water will be flowing if the engine is running. Without this process your engine will over heat.
These water pumps are designed such that they will intentionally leak when a problem occurs. If you notice some of your coolant pooling on your driveway under your car, the water pump very well might cause it.
