This is sometimes
called a universal joint, hints the name U-Joint.
There are u-joints on the front and back of the drive shaft. These are there so it can move while you go over bumps. While driving along, the suspension moves and the drive shaft moves, so something needs to be in place to allow them to move independent of each other. If u-joints were not used, the drive shaft would bend or the transmission and rear end could get ruined.
It’s very important to keep these u-joints lubed. If they get any play in them you should replace them right away. If the drive shaft came out of your vehicle it could cause you to have a wreck and could do major damage to your engine and vehicle.
