In order to

block. When you turn the key to start your car or truck, this starter motor turns, engages with the flywheel, and starts
cranking the engine.

The starter motor has a little clutch in it so that when the engine starts and you let go of the ignition key, it will pull back away from the flywheel and return into the starter so that it won’t ruin the starter or damage the teeth on the starter and flywheel.
