The various mirrors
on vehicles today have change quite a bit since the early days. One enhancement that we are all familiar with is noted by
the phrase ‘Objects in mirror are closer than they appear’. In order for the driver to have a good field of view when looking
at the mirror on the passenger side of the car, that mirror must be made slightly convex.
By making the mirror convex it also does make objects seems smaller than they are. With that same concept the objects will seem farther away. So the warning message is there because if you don’t keep this in mind you could change lanes and not realize another vehicle was closer to you than expected.
Some side mirrors are heated, some with built in defogger, some with electric motors to move them to a preset position depending on who is in the drivers’ seat.
Some rear view mirrors also have a built in monitor for a backup camera. Some will automatically dim when bright lights are behind you, and some have a manual lever for you to adjust for the glare. One method to accomplish this is with built in small prisms and when tilted will cause the reflective surface to change.
These rear view mirrors are designed to break away from the windshield in the event of a collision to minimize injury. Occasionally you might have one of these rear view mirrors fall off maybe due to the high heat. When that happens you can get some glue specifically designed for reattaching.
