The steering
gearbox (sometimes called a steering gear) is what allows you to turn the wheels on your vehicle. It’s like a little transmission
in which it has gears inside of it and changes the ratio of turning the steering wheel and turning the wheels.
Most vehicles have what is called a steering rack instead of a gearbox. But quite often it’s still referred to as simply a steering gearbox.
While driving, to turn your vehicle you will turn your steering wheel, which will turn the wheels and tires. It makes a ratio of about three to one during this process. As with all of these types of components, it’s very important to fix any leaks or damaged parts. Loose or extra play in your steering wheel also needs to be addressed. Too much play in the steering can cause an accident.
