The flywheel
is mounted to the engine and a clutch plate is mounted to the transmission. The flywheel is what your torque converter and
starter engage off of. It has a tooth ring around it and when you start your ignition the starter will engage with the flywheel
and this process will cause your entire engine to crank.
The automatic transmission vehicles have flex plates, and the manual transmission has flywheels. Some of these are balance points for the engine, and some are just for the starter and torque converter.
The clutch plate will press against the flywheel when the transmission is engaged. This will allow the transmission to turn and will turn your drive shaft, differential, axle, and your wheels.
