This is designed
in several pieces. You have an exhaust manifold, cylinder head, header pipe, catalytic converter (some vehicles have two
of these), a short extension pipe, muffler (or silencer, designed to reduce noise), and then a tail pipe. On some vehicles
this can also encompass a turbocharger (designed to increase engine power).
The function of the exhaust is to move the toxic and noxious exhaust gases from the engine in a controlled fashion into the outside air. Most of the exhaust systems are made of stainless steel. This keeps them from rusting and can handle the high heat caused by the exhaust gases. Some of the manufacturers don’t use stainless steel, but a lot do and most aftermarket exhausts can be obtained in stainless steel.
