Engine Timing

Engine Timing In order for your engine to run correctly, the piston position, valve position, spark timing, etc… must all happen at an exact time. For all of this to happen, your engine timing must be set exactly. If this is not exact, you will have a decrease in performance, increase in pollution, decrease in power, bad fuel economy, and if far enough out your engine won’t even run.

The components that make this up used to all be chain driven on most vehicles, but now some are chain and belt driven. This is called Valve Cam Piston Timing. This is designed to have a piston at top dead center and while at that position, it will have the valve closed. In order to do that, with an over head cam you must have a timing belt.

It’s very important that you change these per the manufacturer's recommendations, usually 60,000 to 90,000 miles.

Most of the modern vehicles have their timing set by an engine control unit, a computer that can do all this on the fly. The older vehicles that have a mechanical spark with distributors, they use inertia to do this. They have rotating weights and springs that are used to control the timing. In addition they will use a vacuum off of the manifold as part of this process.

To get this set correctly you will need to use an ignition timing light.

If you need to get a timing light, or other parts related to the timing of your vehicle, let us at Clickonautoparts.com help you. If you can’t find something in our online catalog, fill out our online form and let us do the checking for you.
