Drive Shafts

Drive ShaftThe drive shaft on most vehicles today uses a very rigid shaft that will deliver the power from the transmission to the differential. A front engine vehicle that is also rear-wheel drive will have a drive shaft that will run almost the entire length of the vehicle.

Mounted to the engine is a transmission (or gearbox) that the drive shaft mounts directly to. This will run down and connect to the rear differential. From there the torque will be applied to the wheels.

On some high performance cars they’ve installed a rear-mounted transaxle that will allow placement of the clutch and transmission at the rear of the vehicle. This will give them much improved weight balance.

A drive shaft sometimes has two, three, or maybe even four u-joints. Every time you change your oil check to see if you need to re-grease these u-joints. These u-joints can wear out and start creating a vibration and can cause serious damage if it comes apart. This can become a major repair if it’s not checked often, however it’s a minor repair for the do it yourselfer.

If it’s a replacement drive shaft that you need or maybe new u-joints for your existing drive shaft, let us at Clickonautoparts.com get those parts delivered to you. We have many warehouses spread across the nation and can drop ship directly from one of them and have it at your door the next day.
