Normally this is
something you deal with in a standard transmission vehicle. This allows you to press in on your clutch pedal (left-most
pedal), which allows a friction disc to separate from the flywheel. This is normally pressed together using springs. Once
separated you can freely change gears with the shifter knob or just simply coast.
Clutches found in some high performance competition cars and some large trucks will use ceramic versions of these. The ceramic has a much higher friction coefficient. These are not used in our normal everyday driving because they tend to grab a hold in somewhat of a sticky fashion.
