The
evaporator is a component that makes up the complete air conditioning system. The evaporator looks like a little version
of the radiator that is under the hood of your vehicle.
The evaporator is located under the dash, inside your vehicle normally on the passenger side behind the fascia above the area where their feet go while sitting in the seat.
The cold low-pressure refrigerant will pass through this evaporator and will vaporize and absorb heat from the air. A blower motor will blow air across this evaporator and that is how the air gets cooled down.
Evaporation works in basically the same way as if you spray water on your hand, then your hand will feel cool. The water will evaporate and will take some of the heat from the surface of your skin with it.
After the air is blown across the evaporator, it will then go through the dash vents or the defrost vents. Today, these AC components are designed for use in the wintertime for the defrosters as well.
